Amazon IoT Cloud Platform is an extremely powerful platform that enables communication between real world sensors and allows collection and analysis of data. The Amazon platform is extremely easy to use (atleast for geeks!). The sensors (or “Things”) can report their status to the platform via JSON messages. The platform is based on MQTT protocol which is a lightweight protocol that enables messaging for small sensors and mobile devices. The MQTT protocol is meant to be optimized for high-latency or unreliable networks which is perfect for real-world applications such as a fast moving vehicle or a temperature sensor in a remote location.
Apart from the IoT platform, Amazon has provided a slew of complementary services. Amazon Lambda , for example, is a compute service that runs code in response to events making it easy to build applications.
The applications are endless and with IOT gaining prominence it will be exciting to see how Amazon IOT cloud platform evolves and helps the developments. An interesting early application is the Amazon IOT Button . Its a little piece of hardware that is not expensive with a single button. Early adopters have programmed it to perform tasks like ordering detergent or opening garage doors. Its yet easy for laymen to program and use but it seems to be a step in the right direction. We can envision users programming such a device using visual blocks to set the temperature of their homes or to play music.
2017 promises to be the year of Smart Cities and IoT is an integral part of that vision. IoT combines with big data and smart analytics can make some interesting applications that can ease the flow of humans and information in today’s cities. Some applications include smart parking, smart water monitoring, smog monitoring.
Its exciting times and we at Xoom Solutions are eager to be part of the revolution.
